Can dogs go on Lewes Beach?

Dogs allowed, with limitsas of 3 August 2026

Dogs are allowed on Lewes today, with limits

Today, before 8 am and after 6:30 pm — not in between. Leashed, and only outside those hours. Lewes is bay-side, so this is the calm-water option for a dog that won't handle surf — but the window is narrow and the guarded stretch may be changing.

Yes, but only before 8am and after 6:30pm from May 1 to September 30. All day otherwise, always leashed. Lewes was reviewing a full summer ban at guarded beaches in December 2025 — check before you go.

Lewes. Dogs are legal here right now, but only before 8 am and after 6:30 pm — the guard stand is the thing that decides it. Turn up in the middle of the day and you are in the wrong.

This one may be about to change

On 17 December 2025 a Lewes ad hoc committee met to consider banning dogs outright during summer at the guarded beaches, to reduce confusion and dog waste. The city's own FAQ still publishes the before-8am / after-6:30pm rule, and we have not found a record of a final vote. Given that Rehoboth quietly re-cut its own dates a month later, in January 2026, this is the single Delaware beach rule we would most want confirmed by phone before making a trip.

Where to go instead during the closure

Most guides answer the summer question with "you can't." These are the places where a dog is legal anyway.
