Are dogs banned from Delaware State Parks in summer?
Only on the guarded swimming beaches, and only from May 1 to September 30. Everywhere else in the park — the non-guarded sand and the drive-on surf-fishing beaches — leashed dogs are legal all year, including July.
The distinction the whole thing turns on
State law prohibits pets from lifeguarded beaches between May 1 and September 30. It is very easy to read that as "dogs are banned from the state park beaches in summer," and almost every guide does. But a guarded swimming beach is a small marked stretch of a very long park. The rest of the sand — the non-guarded portions, and the drive-on surf-fishing beaches at Cape Henlopen, Delaware Seashore and Fenwick Island — is open to leashed dogs every day of the year.
That is the entire answer to the summer question, and it is sitting inside the sentence everyone quotes as a ban.
A guarded swimming beach is the stretch with the stand on it. The ban follows the stand, not the park boundary — walk past the guarded section and you are on sand where a leashed dog is legal in July.

Conditions everywhere else
- Leashed at all times. Six feet is the statewide maximum outside designated off-leash areas.
- Proof of rabies vaccination is required in state parks. Carry the tag or the paperwork.
- Clean up. Use the doggie dooleys where they exist; carry bags where they don't.
What it costs in 2026
Entry fees rose on 1 March 2026 and the beach parks roughly doubled. Most guides still quote the old numbers, so budget from this table rather than from a blog post.

The tradeoff nobody mentions
The beaches where your dog is legal in summer are the beaches without lifeguards — which means the ones people drive onto and fish from. Discarded fishhooks and cut monofilament line are the genuine hazard here, and a hook in a paw or a swallowed line is a vet trip, not an inconvenience. Walk in front of the dog on a short leash near the tackle line, and don't let it forage in the wrack.
Lums Pond is the other one to know
